The town of Bocaue got its name from the “Bukawe” tree which can be found abundantly in almost every part of the barrrio during the old times. It was first established by Franciscan missionaries as a barrio of Meycauayan in 1582 before becoming a town in April 11, 1606. Subsequently, Bocaue became the first town to gain independence from the old Meycauayan which is composed of the municipalities of Marilao, Santa Maria, San Jose del Monte, Obando, Valenzuela, and the present Meycauayan. Bocaue’s economy is dominated by the fireworks making industry earning it the title as the “Fireworks Capital of the Philippines”. Besides pyrotechnics, garments, chicharon making, and rice milling also form part of the commerce industry that make up Bocaue’s economy. Fish, paper, furniture, textile, leather products, metallic products, chemical and pharmaceutical are some of the major products. There are also resorts in Bocaue that you can visit if you want to go swimming especially during the summer season.
The tourism industry is very much alive in Bocaue. There are religious and heritage sites that you can visit and a religious festival, the Feast of the Holy Cross of Wawa, is held every first Sunday of July of each year, a time when local and foreigh tourist visit Bocaue to witness the floating Pagoda traverse the Bocaue River. The Philippine Arena, a multipurpose indoor arena at Ciudad de Victoria, a 140-hectare tourism enterprise zone, can also be found in Bocaue. It is the biggest indoor arena in the world upon its completion in 2014.
